Love and marriage can be complicated for young women in urban China. Despite societal pressure to get married there, dating is often frowned upon. So when the Chinese photographer @muyi_xiao read about a 16-year-old couple who got married in a small village in southeastern China, she was compelled to find out more. Traveling to small cities and towns, @muyi_xiao found the practice of teenage marriage to be widespread in the area. One couple she met, pictured here, are expecting a child together. They married 3 days after they met in 2014. Jie, pictured here with her 18-year-old husband Wen, is 13.
This weekend, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ #lensblog and @cunyjschool are sponsoring #nyportfolio16, an annual portfolio review that provides photographers the opportunity to have their work seen and celebrated. This #nytweekender, we’ll be sharing more photos from participants at #nyportfolio16. Visit the link in our profile to see more photos by @muyi_xiao.
