This is biofluorescent coral, emitting a natural green glow deep underwater. This coral produces fluorescent proteins that make up 14 percent of its body mass, says marine biologist David Gruber. The result? Beautiful, glow-in-the-dark reefs. "Instead of bringing color underwater with us," he says, "we've been looking at the blue ocean, and the animals living there for millions of years, that have evolved to take in the blue light and give off other colors."
