When @muhammadali refused induction into the U.S. military in 1967, citing religious grounds as a member of the Muslim faith, he was immediately stripped of his heavyweight title, and his boxing licenses in New York and other states were tossed aside, too. Only in 1970 did things begin to shift, when a New York judge ruled that New York’s athletic commission had violated @muhammadali’s rights by barring him from fighting. 10 days later, on September 24, 1970, @muhammadali showed up at the commission’s offices in #Manhattan, seeking reinstatement as a boxer. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer took this photo of @muhammadali filling out paperwork.
