“That I am a national figure because I was the first person in 192 years to be at once a congressman, black and a woman proves, I would think, that our society is not yet either just or free,” #ShirleyChisholm wrote in her 1970 autobiography, “Unbought and Unbossed.” She later said she did not want to be remembered as the first black woman to be elected to Congress, or to run for president, but rather as a black woman who “dared to be herself.” Here, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Meyer Liebowitz captured Shirley looking resolute while working as a census taker. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ census article that ran on August 1, 1970 relegated Shirley’s role to a footnote, and until now, this photo was never published.
