A group of #Harlem residents played cards on 100th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues. On August 8, 1966, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ ran an article that said many Harlem residents wished more white people would visit the neighborhood to see it for themselves. To accompany the article, the staff photographer Don Hogan Charles, then 27 years old, was assigned to take pictures documenting Harlem, the community in which he lived. 4 of his photos made it into print. The hundreds of other photographs that Don shot, which we found the negatives to in our #archives, offer a fuller portrait of the neighborhood and his neighbors. We’ll be sharing more of Don’s photos this #nytweekender, as part of our #UnpublishedBlackHistory series. Visit the link in our profile to read the original 1966 article, and see more photos of #UnpublishedBlackHistory.
