Children played in front of an apartment complex in #Harlem. In 1966, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer Don Hogan Charles, then 27 years old, was assigned to spend a weekend photographing Harlem, where he lived. Don, the first black photographer hired by @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, had less than 2 days to complete his #nytassignment, but his images — 4 of which made it into print — offer a fuller portrait of the neighborhood and his neighbors than the text they accompanied. The residents of Don Hogan Charles’s Harlem are fully rounded people, not caricatures, symbols or subjects to be studied. We’ll be sharing more of Don’s photos this #nytweekender.
