“In the Arctic, roads are magical,” writes @csmphotos for @nytimestravel. “They appear in the fall and melt in the spring. Others, buckled by permafrost, undulate in the snow.” @csmphotos took this picture from the passenger’s seat of a truck traveling along the ice road from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk, a remote town on the Arctic Ocean in Canada’s Northwest Territories. For generations, the ice road — which is only open 4 months out of the year — has been the winter lifeline for Tuk (population 965). It provides a lifeline for residents to drive to get cheaper gas and cheaper milk. But a new road that's being built could transform their lives. This gravel-topped road will be the only public highway that stretches to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, and upon completion will fulfill a decades-old dream to link all 3 Canadian coasts — the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic.Follow @nytimestravel this #nytweekender to see more photos from a #roadtrip to the end of the world.
