The choreographer Alwin Nikolais, who died in 1993, has long been accused of dehumanizing dance. Although, shapes may take the place of bodies and masks the place of faces, there’s no denying the heart in Alwin’s choreography. Earlier this week at @thejoycetheater, the @ririewoodbury dance company celebrated his work with a program of 4 pieces, spanning Alwin’s long career. @andrea_mohin, who covers dance for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, photographed 2 @ririewoodbury dancers performing “Gallery,” which the writer Gia Kourlas described as “an adventure of disembodied heads, floating pinwheels and dancing clowns — the scary sort.
