The Rev. Wyatt Tee Walker served as chief of staff for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 1960 to 1964 and served as the pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem for nearly 4 decades. In this photo — taken by the photographer Michael Evans on April 5, 1970 — the reverend has traded his pulpit for the trunk of a car, as he delivers a speech to a crowd gathered on the street. Although the image captures the urgency of the fight against drug dealers and addiction, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ did not include a photograph in the article it ran the next day. We spoke to Dr. Walker, now 86, about this image, which is part of our #UnpublishedBlackHistory series. “I guess we felt abandoned. Our children were at risk.
