When a 21-year-old upstart toppled the top-seeded tennis player at a tournament in July 1964, @ニューヨーク・タイムズ published 2 photos of Dennis Ralston, the No. 2 ranked player at that time. But the story didn’t include a single picture of the winner: a young player named Arthur Ashe, pictured here in a photo taken by @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Neal Boenzi. #ArthurAshe would ultimately become the first black man to win @wimbledon, the @usopen and @australianopen. But in July 1964, he was just 6th in the nation. So maybe that was why we didn’t run this photo. Or maybe it was because the shots of Ralston were more dramatic. Or perhaps it was hard for our editors at that time to imagine that Arthur Ashe’s victory was more than just a lucky break.
During #blackhistorymonth, we’re sharing unpublished @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photos that reveal major moments in black history. Follow along: #UnpublishedBlackHistory
