An abandoned timber mill outside Burns, Oregon, the largest town in Harney County. Today, half the jobs in Oregon are clustered in just 3 counties in and around Portland. And isolated, rural counties like Harney — where 7,126 people are spread across an area about the size of Massachusetts — are too far away from those urban centers to catch the economic lift. The residual anger of those caught in the financial undertow affects how Burns residents think about the armed protesters’ takeover at the federal wildlife sanctuary, and the arguments about what should happen next. @fremson photographed this scene while on #nytassignment in rural Oregon.
