Times were once very good on the high desert of east-central Oregon. A place like Burns — remote and obscure until a group of armed protesters took over a nearby federal wildlife sanctuary — was full of civic pride and bustle. In their heyday, Harney County and Burns, its largest town, were economically important in a way that now seems unthinkable in the rural West. Today, 7,126 people are spread across the county, an area about the size of Massachusetts. Meanwhile, cities like Portland and Salt Lake City are gobbling up more of the jobs than ever, especially the good ones. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @fremson captured a snow-covered car parked outside the Knotty Pine Motel, one of many shuttered businesses in #BurnsOregon.
