“Martin Luther King is Slain in Memphis; A White is Suspected; Johnson Urges Calm,” read the front page of the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ on April 5, 1968. After the murder of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sporadic violence broke out, scattered across the nation. In several cities, the @us.nationalguard was called out or alerted. President Lyndon B. Johnson responded to the widespread disorder by making a brief television address, in which he asked “every citizen to reject the blind violence that has struck Dr. King, who lived by nonviolence.” The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer Don Hogan Charles captured this scene in front of a looted store in Harlem. #MLKday
