Men held their hats by their sides as the coffin of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was carried through the streets of Atlanta on a crude farm wagon pulled by 2 Georgia mules. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ wrote the procession “was followed by tens of thousands of mourners, black and white, the lowly and the powerful, mingling in silent tribute to the slain civil rights leader.” Unofficial estimates put the number of marchers at about 50,000, with perhaps 100,000 more who viewed the procession and open-air general service. Dr. King was laid to rest at South View Cemetery beside his grandparents.
