Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | One hundred years ago, this spot was living hell. This was the front line of the Western Front on The Somme where tens of thousands of men died in some of the most violent fighting of WWI.

Time has a way of concealing the physical violence of the world’s first modern mass destruction but the effects of WWI linger inside all of us in ways that are difficult to see.

WWI was a disaster of incomprehensible, inhuman scale. The legacy of the inhuman scale introduced by WWI is everywhere as we see machines increasingly replace human beings in what would ordinarily be a person-to-person interaction. As a practicing emergency physician, I work in one of the few places where a human scale is retained and where the human touch and the human heart can not be replaced with technology.
