Doug and Kris Tompkins, two of the word’s most visionary conservationists, admire a favorite view in Patagonia - the icy east face of Cerro San Lorenzo, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. The photo was taken during a 2009 trip into Estancia El Rincon, then owned by Conservación Patagonica, a non-profit founded by the Tompkins. In 2013, the Tompkins donated the 37,500 acre property to the Argentina Park system to expand adjacent Perito Moreno National Park. With my first posts of 2016, I want to honor the life and legacy of Doug Tompkins, who died in early December 2015 while kayaking in Chile, and to mourn the untimely loss of a friend, a mentor and a remarkable man whose unstinting commitment to protecting wild places has resulted in the re-wilding and conservation of 2.2 million acres of wild lands in #Argentina and #Chile. Doug and his partner and wife, Kris McDivitt Tompkins have, through their charitable organizations Conservación Patagonica, The Conservation Land Trust and Tompkins Conservation, helped created 5 national parks in South America, with others planned, rehabilitated range, forest and wetlands and critical wildlife habitat and fought for wild and un-dammed rivers. Doug’s energy, his love of wilderness and of his family and friends, his ideas and vision, will be sorely missed - but his spirit remains in the broad expanse of Patagonia steppe, in the rugged peaks of the southern Andes, in the dense coastal rainforest with its towering, thousand year-old alerce trees, in the vast, sparkling wetlands of Iberá in northern Argentina, and in the inspiration he has given to all of us who knew and loved him to work for protection of wild lands and creatures.
