No larger than a house cat, it is entirely at home in the pounding waves and rugged Pacific shorelines of southern Peru and Chile. The Humboldt Current that bathes this coast is cold and rich, so there is plenty for these hyperactive little otters to eat: crabs, fish and even, as I discovered, the occasional octopus.
This otter popped up right beside my boat, gripping a live, writhing octopus in its teeth (I’m guessing the octopus weighed more than the otter) It struggled to drag its wriggling prey to shore, where it presented this feast to its waiting pup. The pup, however, had already eaten three monstrous crabs and seemed uninterested. What happened then amazed me; Taking advantage of the indecision, the octopus used its eight arms to simply “walk” back into the water, and back to whatever it has been doing before getting snatched. #marineotter #otters #endangered #chiloe #chungungo #gatodelmar
