photo by @randyolson | @thephotosociety | It’s a big jungle out there… This @ナショナルジオグラフィック assignment involved accompanying a Conservation International Rapid Assessment Team (RAP) into the jungles of Suriname. They needed to know what lives there before trying to save it. All of these photographs are taken along the Palumeu River. There is a Hydro dam that could drain the Palumeu watershed into the Suriname river to provide additional power. This would destroy diversity and allow for resource extraction. The Greenstone Belt gold mines near the hydro dam and associated holding ponds destroy the creeks and turn this jungle landscape into a moonscape. There is also a project to have a road cut thru the this survey area and connect with a new road in Brazil. This is one of the most protected pristine jungles in the world and the cancers in the forest from gold mining and other resource extraction would only increase with easy road access.
