Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho #natgeo - Most of what we think we know about penguins is probably wrong. Although we picture them living in frozen Antarctica, most of the world’s 18 species live in more temperate zones, and may not encounter ice and snow in their entire lives. Consider, for example, this rare Yellow-eyed Penguin, breeding only in the coastal forests of New Zealand. Here, on tiny Enderby Island, a single penguin emerges from its nesting hole amid a fairyland rata forest filled with the songs of bellbirds and parakeets. It is probably the most un-penguin-like place one could ever imagine.

Yellow-eyed Penguins were once widespread along the coasts of NZ’s South Island, but coastal habitat loss and non-native predators (like feral cats, ferrets and others) have reduced their numbers to little more than 400 birds on the mainland. They are doing well on offshore Enderby only because predators were removed; Getting rid of feral cats on South Island itself is a vastly more complicated task.
