Photo: @rwmaddenphotog // This image was made in Ngorongoro Crater in September 2015 on my annual Photo Safari to Tanzania. It is one of 37 Black Rhinoceros remaining in the crater and one of 5,000 in the world. This number is down from approximately 85,000 in 1970.
Last year in South Africa, home of 80% of the rhino population, an unprecedented 1,215 were killed. This year, as of August 27, 750 additional rhinos have died for their horns.
To compound the issue, last month a South African judge lifted the domestic ban on trade in rhinoceros horns brought by 'game farmers' arguing that legalized trade would cut poaching.
Will legalizing trade stem the poaching? The South African government indicated that it would appeal the ruling.
