Photo by Kevin Schafer @schaferpho - Anxious for a better view, a young Cozumel Coati rides of the back of his family amid a forest of vertical tails. The island of Cozumel, off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, has been separated from the mainland since the Pleistocene, and many of the animals that live there are unique, having evolved in isolation. One of these Ice Age castaways is the Cozumel Coati, a highly social carnivore. Coatis travel in large extended family groups, foraging for anything they can find including fruit, snakes, insects and crabs. Most of the millions of tourists that come to Cozumel for the beaches and coral reefs never encounter these island natives, or realize how rare they really are. www.kevinschafer.com @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeocreative #cozumel #endangered #Mexicowildlife
