Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Carving of French WWI Chasseurs Alpins in prayer. The Chasseurs Alpins are French troops with special training in high mountain combat.
The chapel where this carving is found is located in a French WWI underground city which holds two other chapels, one of which is Jewish. Nearby is a stairway that led to the trenches. Soldiers would stop here to pray just before they marched into battle.

Across from the chapel are a series of notches carved in stone which were created as a place for soldiers to place their rifles while they prayed.
