a visit to the rialto market early this morning - i was excited and apprehensive on my walk there - excited to see what i might find, apprehensive at being an outsider, not speaking the language - what i found was indeed delightful and surprising, like these canocce with their luminescent shells and striking black markings- surprising as one of the very busy fishmongers took the time to come around the stall when he saw my puzzled look - tell me about the canocce and how they are typically prepared in venice - neither of us fully understanding the others words but managing a conversation all the same -
