When Chuol, 9, arrived on a small island in a swamp in South Sudan, joining tens of thousands of others who fled from fighting, he often liked to be by himself. Gradually, though, he returned to some of the normal rhythms of childhood. Most afternoons on the island, Chuol played soccer with his new friends. “When I score a goal, I do like I have seen Chelsea players do on television,” he said. “I run to the corner, and all my teammates will come run up to me and hug me and congratulate me.” @lynseyaddario photographed Chuol for #NYTMag.
