Villa Baviera, a farming community tucked away in the foothills of the Andes in #Chile, was once home to a deeply secretive German sect. The group’s former leader was convicted of sexually abusing young boys and was under investigation for collaborating with the regime of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. The community that remains — victims of their former leader — has welcomed tourism to help stay afloat. But even for visitors, it is impossible to ignore Villa Baviera’s dark past. Along the winding roads are huge holes, like the one shown here — excavations where investigators searched for evidence of criminal activity. Tomas Munita photographed Villa Baviera while on #nytassignment.
