Humans have used cold as therapy since ancient times. But #cryotherapy chambers, like the one shown here, are different. First, you step into an upright cylindrical capsule. The floor grinds upward, and your head pops out. There’s a whoosh. Then, you’re encased in gas, below the neck, in a tank that can reach temperatures below 300 degrees Fahrenheit — colder than the coldest naturally occurring temperature recorded on Earth. Karsten Moran photographed Louis Ruggiero during a whole-body cryotherapy session at @kryolife in Manhattan. Enthusiasts bill the practice — which, at @kryolife, costs $90 for a three-minute session — as a path to pain reduction, injury recovery and mood enhancement. But a woman’s death at a cryotherapy chamber in Nevada in October has focused attention on the unregulated practice.
