Photo: @rezaphotography // Photographing a Dream and Weariness // In pursuit of my continuous quest to study different religions and their rites, I did a reportage on the myths of the Bible in 2008 for National Geographic. The idea was to illustrate the myths with scenes from the present. I indulged my interest in the symbolism which is part of my propensity for poetry. A certain nostalgia filled me. The region was in upheaval from the same tensions as in 2000, during my reportage on Abraham. Since then, a wall had been erected between Palestine and Israel, clearly symbolizing their division. For this project, I was not supposed to deal with current affairs but rather the past. One morning, there happened to be an open door in which the Dome of the Rock appeared. It had rained during the night, and the stone ground was covered with water. The puddle was transformed into a blurry image of the Dome, a sort of waking dream. I waited in the gallery for a long time to work on the reflection of the building and the passers-by. A short while later, on the esplanade, the journalist in me returned. As the old Palestinian man advanced with difficulty. I followed him with my gaze, and my camera. I waited until each of the elements distinguished themselves against the sky: the tree, the gilded Dome, the keffiyeh-covered head of the man, and the church. The perspective of the lines of the stairway lends a dynamic which contrasts with the apparent lassitude of this elderly man.
