Oktoberfest is in full swing now in Munich. Germans love their beer religiously. Literally. Around 60 miles from Munich is Marktl, the birthplace of Cardinal Ratzinger, who became the first German Pope in nearly 500 years, Pope Benedict XVI. When he was elected, many Germans were so excited that the country’s largest tabloid’s headline read “Wir sind Papst” (We are Pope). Marktl suddenly turned into a tourist destination. Its citizens made a quick buck by selling pope related souvenirs, most notably the Pope Beer, which became a popular brew in shops and pubs. Even after Benedict’s resignation, the beer is still available.
