The Ugandan police locked Simon and his boyfriend in cells. The next morning, after suffering from multiple attacks, they were taken to a hospital where a doctor took pity on them and allowed them to escape. Simon fled to the capital, Kampala, where he lives now. He has not seen his boyfriend since the attack. @hammond_robin photographed Simon — who did not want to be identified — in Kampala in September 2014. “Wonderful gains in equality have been seen in some parts of the world, but persecution persists,” says @hammond_robin, who traveled to seven countries to make portraits of the #LGBTI community. “It is my hope that bringing these survivors and their stories from out of the shadows can be a step toward a world where one day, who you love cannot be considered a crime.” We’re sharing @hammond_robin’s portraits from places @whereloveisillegal this #nytweekender.
