Joseph, a 29-year-old transgender woman, with her mother, Mai. While her mother accepts her daughter’s identity choice, the community in #Kampala, Uganda has not. Joseph has survived numerous homophobic attacks, including by the police, who have arrested and tortured her. She was hospitalized for four months after the attack. Today, Joseph is an #LGBT and HIV/AIDS activist in Kampala. @hammond_robin photographed her in March 2015.

@hammond_robin traveled to seven countries where persecution of #LGBTI people is widespread. “I wanted to give those individuals a chance to say what they wanted to say, and be seen how they wanted to be seen, by collaborating with them in their portrait’s creation and allowing them to write their own stories.” We’ll share more of his work for #nytweekender.
