Photos by James Balog (@earthvisioninstitute) allow us to see the face of #wildfire in a new way. His infrared images from this summer's wildfires in California — like the one shown here — focus our attention on heat, #NYTMag writes, erasing the apocalyptic smoke that dominates most photos of fire. “I wanted to get down to the elemental,” @earthvisioninstitute told #NYTMag. “Infrared renders heat as white and allows us to really look at flames with a lingering gaze, without that instinctive mammalian response of fear at the sight of orange and red.” See more unearthly images of fire by @earthvisioninstitute in this week’s #NYTMag, or by visiting the link above.
