"She walked away and left me on my knees begging for her to at least listen to what I have to say. I left school while being mocked, laughed at. On that day, I hated myself to the extreme. I felt I wasn’t worthy living. How, when the only person I trusted in the world turned her back on me? And this was the beginning of my suffering.” - K., right, a gay man from Uganda, on the day his mother disowned him.

@hammond_robin photographed K. in #Kampala, Uganda in 2014. He created the photo-driven awareness campaign @whereloveisillegal to tell the stories of people like K. — those who are persecuted for their love. Almost 2.8 billion people live in countries where identifying as lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual and intersex could (#LGTBI) lead to imprisonment, corporal punishment or even death. We’ll share more photos for #nytweekender.
