Donnell Stephens’ (@donnythecynic) first bass came from a pawnshop in Oceanside, California, when he was 10 years old. He wound up teaching himself how to play, spending hours a day learning thrash and progressive rock from groups like Suicidal Tendencies and Megadeth, while also listening to a mix of classic jazz, soul and funk from his father’s collection. Now 20, he has upgraded a bit on the instrument front, opting for a six-string instead of the traditional four.
“I feel like it took a while for me to have the confidence to even show people my bass-playing,” says Donnell. “I never really expected my music or ideas to mean anything to anyone else, but the amount of appreciation and love I’ve received over time is a good feeling. Just knowing that my music can be a way to bring happiness and feelings of positivity to others is a great thing.”
