Photo by @CarltonWard // Florida cowboys are called "Crackers" for sounds of their whips. Here a Cracker rides out to gather a herd from Rafter T Ranch in the Kissimmee River Valley. Cattle ranching in North America began in 1521, when Ponce de Leon first brought cattle and horses to Florida from Spain. Cattle still range across millions of acres of Florida, where remaining ranches protect some of the state's best wildlife habitat, including the headwaters of the Everglades and Florida Wildlife Corridor.
