The kids are back in school, the tourists hordes have left for business-as-usual on the mainland, and the long coastal sandbar heaves a giant sigh of relief after all the hard work, traffic, mayhem, and over-the-top partying of the summer months. Now it’s time for the fisherfolk, the surfers, vacationing couples, and local beach regulars to enjoy what many consider the Outer Banks’ finest season. The water will stay warm through October, fish will begin their annual runs to southern climes, and with any luck a steady parade of not-too-deadly hurricanes and nor’easters will kick up some good waves. This is the time when locals pass each other in the store with knowing nods.
