In 2003 Bruce Miller, Doug Chabot and I tried Meru. The light and fast approach sorta kinda worked until we were worked. I'm scratching my head as Bruce patiently sorts the rack. The upper headwall was longer and steeper than we had anticipated. We had five days of "fun" before we retreated.
At this point the obsession with Meru was starting to set in. It would wake me in the middle of the night. The elusive summit and the experience I sought drove me to visualize individual moves and pitches. Why this climb drew me in I've yet to figure out. Was it competitiveness between fellow climbers? Was I feeding the ego? Perhaps some sort of penance? Or simply the thrill of a scary climb? Or was it all of them?
