Photography is what made this man, Galen Rowell, exceptional. Photography is not my strong suite. Snapshots in wild locations are about the extent of my skills. If I capture a keepsake and it's a seed for a story or two, I'm happy. In 2002 Galen joined Rick Ridgeway, @jimmy_chin and myself for a walk across the Chang Tang plateau of Tibet. We chose to endure meager rations so we could study wildlife.
The seven weeks we were on expedition were over summer solstice and early July. Even then it was damn cold. Especially once we burned through our reserves and the daily table spoon of olive oil wouldn't fuel our fingers or toes. We would have to get up each morning to pull our carts on the hard pan and permafrost before it got muddy.
