Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Two people walking across “No Man’s Land” at Butte de Vauquois. For centuries, a beautiful hilltop village and church were found where now there are enormous WWI mine craters that make Butte de Vauquois look like the surface of the moon. 531 mines were exploded here as the French and German Armies attempted to punch through their opponents front line. The bodies of soldiers manning the front line under attack would often simply disappear. To this day, over 8,000 soldiers from both sides remain missing-in-action. Butte de Vauquois is one of the few places where the public can go underground into authentic WWI tunnels. No place like this exists elsewhere on the Western Front. On the German side, 17 kilometers of tunnels remain. On the French side 7 kilometers still exist. An association of extremely dedicated volunteers oversees the site. The best way to experience Vauquois and the many remnants of WWI nearby is through a close friend, Denis Hébrard. Denis was the chief purser for Air France before he retired several years ago. He speaks numerous languages including English, has access to Butte de Vauquois and loves WWI history. He and his wife Bénédicte (also retired from Air France) own “La Scholastique”, a wonderful B&B in a small village near Vauquois. Their years of pampering First Class passengers on Air France come through in their attention to detail, small comforts and warm hospitality and kindness you will experience as their guest at La Scholastique. It’s the nicest place to stay when visiting the Meuse-Argonne or Verdun. Denis can be reached at [email protected].
