Nothing remains of this ancient crossroads on the legendary Silk Road, famed for the travelers and riches that made their way along it, but a phantom city, Niya. The once beautiful gardens of the ancient city-state, located at an oasis in the heart of the indomitable Taklamakan Desert, are now only fossilized tree trunks, extending upwards towards the sky, leaving one to imagine what this sumptuous city once was. It is said that the city state lost a war, but one is left to ponder whether men at arms brought this city to ruin, or rather the inexorable invasion of the desert sands.
