Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | If these walls could talk.... This is a German Field Hospital on the battlefield outside Saint-Mihiel, France. It has a fortified concrete ceiling and is built into a hillside with thick earth above to further protect it from heavy shelling. Wounded soldiers were carried on stretchers from front line trenches via a network of communication trenches to this hospital. An original wartime trench literally runs right to its front door. A tiered system of trauma care existed during WWI just as today. Injured soldiers were initially stabilized at small field hospitals like this one located on the battlefield but behind the front line on second or third line trenches. Severely wounded soldiers needing a higher level of care would be transported to a larger, more sophisticated trauma center located in relative safety miles behind the front. I’m writing this caption in between patients while on duty in a hospital emergency room. Besides my career as a photographer and explorer, I have a second career as a medical doctor specializing in emergency medicine. Profound emotions surface in field hospital likes this where, a century ago, soldiers’ lives were saved by the clinical skill and courage of dedicated battlefield surgeons working with little equipment as fierce fighting raged very close by. Photographed on assignment for the New York Times.
