"In early 1968, when #Jimi Hendrix arrived in San Francisco to play Bill Graham’s Fillmore and Winterland audtoriums, he was already becoming a superstar, and with good reason. @Rolling Stone assigned me and a writer to meet with Jimi in his San Francisco motel during the day prior to his opening concert. Conversing with Hendrix that afternoon I encountered a surprisingly quiet young man, very soft-spoken and articulate, nothing like his performance persona, which was always loud, exciting, electric and filled with visual and musical surprises. Notice his 'hatband.' Years after I took this photo, my friend, the talented music photographer Lynn Goldsmith, explained to me that Jimi’s hatband was, in fact, her former belt. Lynn and her cameras had been hanging out with Jimi one day, Jimi admired Lynn’s belt and, voila, it soon became his hatband. I’ve made many photos of Jimi Hendrix at rest; this is one of my favorites." As told to @Rolling Stone by photographer @baronwolman
