Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | 30,000 French and German WWI soldiers lost their lives here in 1915 during a series of violent battles for control of this peak known as Veil Armond by the French and Hartmannswillerkopf by the Germans. From this vantage point, one can see both the Swiss and German borders and the vast plains which lie in between.

Hartmannswillerkopf became a laboratory for modern military tactics. Here, the principles and techniques of fighting with small, specialized, fast moving squads were first developed. The principal innovator of these tactics was a young German officer during WWI who in WWII became the principal military architect of German Storm Trooper tactics. The field notes and battlefield memos of this German officer are taught today to US Marine officer candidates as part of their training at Quantico, Virginia.

When you think about Navy Seals, Green Berets and other military special operations units, think about this mountain near the southern end of the Western Front where the ideas behind special operations tactics were born a century ago during WWI.
