Hands and feet tell a lot about our lives. These are details that I rely on visually. Frequently it is through them that I identify the symptoms of poverty, work and resistance. One day, on the roads of Baluchistan, I encountered an old man. He was carrying a heavy load of wood on his back, for fuel, and walking over pebbles. His shoes were antique models, made of straw. He was covering 20 kilometers a day searching in this stony desert for the rare pearls that wood represented.

Describing his situation, he said he was still not able to manage "to fill his back”, so great was the scarcity of wood. This was how he earned his bread.
