Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | Carved by a soldier from New England’s Yankee Division a century ago, this carving is about 2/3rd’s the size of an actual horse. Hundreds of soldiers lived in this underground city a century ago for about six weeks which was not enough time for this beautiful carving to be completed.

The soldier/artist never signed his name. Thus we don’t know if he survived WWI, or if he did, whether he was wounded.

While the world above ground was inhospitable to human life, the soldiers created a human world underground where they were relatively safe from the devastatingly lethal shelling. Now in complete darkness, these underground cities give us a glimpse into the soldiers struggle to remain human in an inhuman world, a struggle we all face today.
