In the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, movie stars rule. This hand-painted mural in #Chennai, India, depicts two actors who became politicians: Jayalalithaa Jayaram, right, and the late Marudhur Gopalan Ramachandran, often known as M.G.R. He ruled #TamilNadu for 11 years. Since his death in 1987, Jayalalithaa and her archenemy, a 92-year-old screenwriter, have taken turns running the state. Jayalalithaa's followers, who often call her Amma or “mother,” have been known to crucify and burn themselves to prove their love for her. #NYTMag photo by @harshavadlamani @gettyimages.
