Niccolò Innocenti, exhausted after a game at the annual tournament of calcio storico, or historic football — a brutal, centuries-old competition held every year in #Florence. The game is a spectacle, to say the least. Two teams of 27 players are placed in a sand pit and told, essentially, to do whatever is necessary to get the ball into the other team’s end zone. It’s a strange mix of American football, rugby and street fighting. Florence has four historical quarters, and #calciostorico, which is believed to date to the 15th century, is played by one team from each neighborhood. “When I played for the first time,” Niccolò said, “the sensation I had was one of truly being a man.” Photo by @claravannu for @nytimessports.
