He Quangui, a former gold miner, is slowly dying of silicosis — an irreversible but preventable lung disease he contracted from years spent working in small, unregulated gold mines in central #China. For the past decade, his wife, Mi Shixiu, 36, has had to take care of his every need. When he is too sickly to walk, she carries him. @chiyin_sim has been photographing the couple since 2011, when she first traveled to their remote village in #Shaanxi Province to document the ravages of lung disease among the men who worked as migrant miners. When she started out, she wanted to tell a story about #silicosis. But she soon saw a different narrative. “I realized this was not just a story about a dying man in a remote village in China,” she told our photo blog, Lens. “It was a universal love story.” [1 of 2]
