Sam Peterman warming up before a 1,500-meter run on Saturday. Race after race, as Sam crosses the finish line, she faints. Sam, 15, has neurocardiogenic syncope, or NCS, what has been described as the autonomic nervous system’s failure to keep blood pressure high enough to maintain consciousness. Doctors have cleared her to run, and her father, Dale, has almost always been there to catch her. So Sam just tries not to think about collapsing at the end. Instead, she tells herself to drive her knees and focus on her form, which breaks down as the dizziness takes hold. @nathaniel_brooks_photo photographed Sam for @nytimessports at the at the New York high school state championships.
