On Thursday morning, @evster3 photographed the beginning of what is being billed as the first race of its kind. Fifty-four participants set off from Port Townsend, on the banks of Puget Sound, bound for Ketchikan, Alaska — 750 miles away. Traveling by human-powered crafts, they’re using nothing but imagination and muscle to strive for a $10,000 prize. Those who make it to the finish line are promised “a hot meal, a cold beer, a dry bed, and some well earned accolades.” But the route is long and treacherous, and because this race is a first, no one knows for sure what kind of vessel might win, or how long it might take.
