Ibapyntgen with bugs in #Mawlynnong, a remote Indian village where women rule. When the photographer @karolinklueppel visited, she was inspired make portraits of self-assured young women. Instead of shooting traditional documentary images of the indigenous Khasi, one of the world’s rare matrilineal societies, she sought to capture how the girls’ behavior demonstrated their power. She lived with different families for nine months to create her photo series, #Mdchenland. “In the Khasi culture,” @karolinklueppel told our photo blog, Lens, “women and girls have a special standing in the society and, of course, this exceptional role ‘produces’ a great self-confidence.” We’ll share more photos from this series this weekend for #nytweekender.
